One of the few positives that came out of the pandemic this year is the attention given to local, independent businesses. The Dior Cruise 2021 show was no different, acting as an ode to the artisans of Puglia, Italy, which holds a special place in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s heart. Italian filmmaker, and Chiuri’s long time friend – Edoardo Winspeare – take us behind the scenes in an exclusive documentary dedicated to Puglia and the Dior Cruise show it inspired.
“My choice for the mise-en-scene was an anthropologic one,” explains Winspeare. “I was very interested in capturing the real essence of each individual figure: the artist, the artisan, and, above all Maria Grazia.” The documentary sheds light on the picturesque region in southern Italy, honing in on several talented craftsmen and women. From Fondazione Le Constatine, a group of extraordinary weavers whose work fills the Cruise collection, to artist Pietro Ruffo – whose paintings came to life in the collection.
The display of artisanal skill and talent doesn’t stop with the clothes. Models walked amongst traditional luminaire lighted structures that were scattered with phrases such as “The time for equality is now” – trust Maria Grazia Chiuri for a much needed feminist message. The show was also soundtracked with music by Giuliano Sangiorgi and a live orchestra conducted by Paolo Buonvion, as the Dior girls were joined by a troop of dancers choreographed by Sharon Eyal. The film is a celebration of all things fashion, dance, music, craftsmanship, and of course, women. We love to see it!
