After an eight years at the helm of Mugler, Casey Cadwallader is leaving the French brand. He will be replaced by Miguel Castro Freitas.
Hailing from New Hampshire, USA, Cadwallader began his career studying architecture before an internship at Marc Jacobs prompted him to pivot. He then spent two decades working on the design teams of Loewe, Narciso Rodriguez and Acne Studios. Appointed artistic director of women’s ready-to-wear at Mugler in 2017, his vision for the brand, like that of the brand’s late founder, Thierry Mugler, focused on curved cuts, corsetry, ergonomic body-cons and futuristic fetishwear. He was also recognised for his inclusive casting and body-positive designs and It-girl casting – with Mugler fashion shows and films featuring the likes of Alex Consani, Paris Hilton, Angela Bassett, Irina Shayk, Amber Valetta, Chloë Sevigny, Shalom Harlow, Arca and many others.
Speaking on the announcement, the global brand president of Mugler fashion and fragrances, Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum, said, “Over the last seven years, his unique vision has helped introduce Mugler to a new generation, all the while celebrating core themes of empowerment, inclusivity and identity. On behalf of the team, we wish Casey the utmost success in his next ventures.”
His replacement, Miguel Castro Freitas, has previously held positions at Dior under John Galliano, Saint Laurent under Stefano Pilati and Lanvin under Alber Elbaz. His has also held positions as the head of tailoring at Dior lead by Raf Simons, and as head of womenswear at Dries Van Noten.
“It is an honour to join the spectacular house of Mugler. As one of the twentieth century’s great couturiers, Mr Mugler reimagined the power and limits of fashion. Alongside the teams, I am thrilled to bring my own vision, story and emotion to this monumental heritage,” said Castro Freitas.
Castro Freitas will join Mugler on April 1. His debut show for Mugler will take place in September for the SS26 season, joining a hefty list of debuts including Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, Demna at Gucci and Louise Trotter at Bottega Veneta.
