Is it true, as the saying goes, that even cowgirls get the blues? Well, the answer, according to Ashley Williams’ AW17 collection, was: possibly. Because these were cowgirls, in the sense that they were wearing the piece of equipment essential to being a cowgirl, a cowboy hat. But across their chest was written the word MISERY. And in their hair, rhinestone hair clips that read PARANOIA. Girls that, potentially, needed cheering up. And how better to do so than to get rat-assed? It’s always worked for us. Because this was also about nightclubbing – more specifically, the Milanese club of the 1980s, Paninaro. And less specifically, about that moment on a night out when, to quote the press release: “it’s 5am, are you in paradise or gripped by paranoia? Like good nights out, this collection has a measure of both.” Think of these then as clothes, again to refer to the notes, to go to the party, and then sneak out again in. Which meant a mix of glam tartan dresses dripping with embellishment, slick cropped puffas and Hawaiian prints, sitting alongside trackies, cable-knit jumpers and worn-in jeans. Clothes for the club. And then for bed. Our two favourite things.
