A Trip To The Rome Edition

There’s a lot to pack in when visiting Rome. The Eternal City is home to some of the world’s most beautiful historic sights, rich with culture and delicious cuisine. Trying to cram it all into a long weekend away can mean your trapsing through the cobbled streets for 12-hour days, knackered, with a belly full of pasta. This made returning to The Rome Edition each evening during our visit feel like total bliss.

Located just off Rome’s Via Veneto, and a quick 10-minute stroll to the Spanish Steps or the Trevi Fountain, the Edition finds itself on a quiet side street, offering some respite from the city’s huge crowds of tourists. The hotel joins other Editions in the likes of London, Barcelona and Tokyo. The Rome expansion is made up of 93 rooms. Designed by Ian Schrager, the hotel’s interiors are lavish without being overtly loud.

Built originally to be a bank in the 1940s, you’re greeted by a vast marble reception area where helpful staff make checking in as smooth as possible. Many of the building’s original features have been preserved – like a striking central staircase crafted from rare cipollino marble, imagined by architect Marcello Piacentini. The rooms are equally as elegant, thanks to walnut wood walls and spacious bathrooms which each feature a waterfall shower.

We were tempted to skip the sightseeing altogether and spend our trip enjoying the hotel’s many amenities. A highlight was the rooftop terrace. Spending an afternoon with an Aperol Spritz in hand, sat beside the pool, looking out at the city, was a delight. You can also dine on the roof from lunch time until early evening, too. We enjoyed a delicious clam tagliolini and a succulent smoked provola and aubergine sandwich while the sun was setting.

The great food didn’t stop there. The main restaurant is sleek with a calming garden area. Starting each day with breakfast beneath the jasmine trees that cloak the outdoor area was a treat. Of an evening, the space transforms with a buzzy atmosphere, where guests and locals enjoy dishes inspired by Rome and Naples, all curated by chef Antonio Gentile.

Most evenings then spill into the two ground floor bars: the Punch Room and Jade Bar. We spent a Saturday night enjoying cocktails in the latter. The decadent space is drenched in gorgeous green antique marble and dotted with interesting sculpture work, making the perfect environment to relax in into the early hours.

Despite its grandness, there is such a warmth to this hotel – from the friendliness of the staff to its cosy bars and food areas. If you’re planning on visiting the Eternal City this summer, The Edition is where you should be staying.
