For their latest collection, Z Zegna have taken Winter 2018 (emphasis on “winter”) to a very literal place. Namely, mountains. Big snowy ones. This is where clothes become ‘gear’, enabling one to scale snow-capped peaks and navigate icy ravines in high-performance, high-chic attire. Because if you don’t feel chic climbing a mountain, what’s the point, really? Our experience in such matters is naturally quite limited, which is not to say we haven’t conquered our own figurative summits, but were we to be sent up The Eiger (big hill, Switzerland), we rather like the idea of being wrapped up in this here Z Zegna.
Directly inspired by Oasi Zegna, the edenic enclave of Italian Alps founded Mr. Zegna in 1993 as a nature reserve, the autumnal hues of the collection mirror those found in the area. Deciduous greens meet berry red and slate, while materials are thick and indulgent without compromising performance – bouclé trousers, tweeds and corduroy shirting are fused together with quilting and technical finishes. Presented at this year’s Pitti Uomo, the collection is a commemorative one, paying homage to the Gruppo Sportivo Zegna that was organised by the company for its employees in Trivero – the equivalent of today’s company gym pass perhaps?
