Katharine Hamnett is all about promoting awareness. She has always fought against injustice in its many guises, including her ‘CHOOSE LIFE’ and ‘STOP WAR/ BLAIR OUT’ T-Shirt, as well, of course, as her ‘58% DON’T WANT PERSHING’ meeting with one Ms Thatcher in 1984. It was this desire for awareness that ultimately led her to re-launch her own label last year, built upon ecological sustainability and organic sourcing.
Speaking on her re-entry into fashion with Alexander Fury in the Autumn/ Winter issue of 10 Magazine she said, “It’s completely sustainable, preserving traditional skills, Made in Italy. Organic cotton, no BCI [Better Cotton Initiative] cotton, thank you very much…I think, around these clothes, it’s about awareness, as well. Trying to drive demand for organic cotton. But in the end, there’s nothing like doing it yourself.”
This, the first Summer collection of her eponymous label since re-launching for AW17, sees Katharine do just that, drawing from her extensive archive to present a utilitarian collection where form follows function, incorporating denim, lightweight outerwear, as well as her signature slinky dresses and iconic jumpsuits. Sustainability should always look this good.
