Roksanda took the gong for the prettiest show location out of the London shows this weekend. She brought the fash pack to the rooftop garden of the National Theatre, a floral maze backdropped by the city’s sky scrapers which were bathed in a warm September glow. The architectural grandeur of it all was very fitting for the world Roksanda Ilinčić envisions. Throughout her career, she has looked to the work of women artists and craftspeople to help guide her collections. This time it was Françoise Grossen who was a key inspiration. Grossen’s braided sculptures could be felt in the detailing of the designer’s beautiful dresses. Plaits could be seen snaking down the back of frocks elegantly, or became a centre piece to Erin O’Connor’s closing dress, a mock-croc wonder of a gown.
It was a textual feast throughout. Sculptural dresses were made from hair-like fringing in delightful shades of pink, red and purple. There were also standout suits, cut with hourglass waistlines, as well as silk dresses that danced as the models walked, each featuring a fragmented portrait motif. You can always count on Roksanda to create clothes laced with a total sense of joy.
