Chopova Lowena: Ready-To-Wear-SS27

Chopova Lowena only stage one catwalk show a year, but the energy they create with it reverberates far beyond fashion week. They are world builders, drawing a loyal and ever-increasing following into their compelling creative world. It’s a world that is growing, with the opening of their first store in London earlier this month.

The designers celebrated supernatural female power, calling up witchy Slavic folkloric characters like Baba Yaga and Poland’s Morana to haunt their catwalk, which was scattered with talismanic objects and spooky branches.

That pagan folk story came through in puff-sleeve blouses and beaded bodices, worn over signature carabiner-pleated skirts. Some were patchworked together with lace, tartan, faux fur and gingham, paired with chintzy tights. Everything was spooked-up to the max, with spectacular witchy hair and make-up courtesy of the talented Kiyoko Odo and Lauren Reynolds.

But the designers crossed it with another inspiration – the 1950s female bowling champion Marian Ledewig, who routinely beat the men. That explains both the bowling alley catwalk setting and the retro, boxy bowling shirts, boxer shorts and striped leggings. It was wild. But focused.

With their new shop in mind, Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena are building out their world beyond the skirts that made them a sensation. Bags, a shoe collaboration with Dr. Martens, more menswear and even a dog outfit added to the Chopova Lowena party.
