MM6 Maison Margiela: Ready-To-Wear AW24

They say eyes are the windows to the soul, but does this also apply to plastic googly eyes? If so, what does that say about the MM6 Maison Margiela design team?

For the brand’s AW24 collection – presented in a carpeted, dimly lit venue surrounded by draped white cloth – the team kept their designs quite hush hush across every look. But, the accessories had lots to say, especially the attention grabbing brooches made of googly eyes and safety pins. Perhaps those were the windows to the soul of MM6. There were also bags shaped like carry-on neck pillows, eyewear that resembled school-approved science goggles and handheld good fortune cookie bags. Let’s just say, we will definitely be adding a few items to our wish lists.

MM6 approached this season in a twisted minimalist way, abstracting from its usual, go-to radical antics. Sartorially, it appeared to be simple, but at MM6, nothing is ever as it seems. Deliberately unfinished seams plunged quilted texture outwards, skirts scissored with perilous shortness, and raised shoulder lines made models look like they had hunchbacked postures. They looked rather alien, all the while perfectly plain. Elsewhere, textures were reworked and redone to create symmetry without tedious repetitions, emphasising the streamlined colour palette. Finishing off the 47 piece collection with a standalone, fully cherry-coloured twinset, we were given apt reason to believe that hot pants are about to be red hot all over again.
