Diamonds are a girl’s best friend? Louis Vuitton believes they can be a man’s too, recently announcing the launch of a new menswear fine jewellery line entitled Les Gastons Vuitton. Centred around Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the grandson of the French house’s founder, the wondrous 18-piece offering explores different facets of his personality to inform its design, while its name is a playful fusion of Gaston’s first name as well as the French phrase ‘les garçons’ meaning ‘the boys’.
Spearheaded by LV’s artistic director of watches and jewellery, Francesca Amfitheatrof, the luxury house was inspired by Gaston-Louis’ prowess as a knowledgeable inventor, cultural enthusiast and avid collector. Born in 1883, the muse was also known for his significant contribution to the house’s trunk archive. Focussing the collection on three distinct elements of his life – his inventions, his playful nature and interest in design and architecture – each piece is exquisitely crafted.
Although the collection is being marketed as a branch of menswear, the house has emphasised that the ideal customer is someone who embodies the creative attitude of the collection as opposed to someone from a particular gender.
The first chapter of the collection is entitled The Creators and features an assortment of dark blue titanium pieces, nodding to Gaston-Louis’ passion for invention with a puzzle ring and pendant that also serves as a draftsman pencil. The next section, entitled The Collectors is spattered with the house’s classic motifs and includes more traditional jewellery silhouettes like Cuban link bracelets, signet rings and tag necklaces. Lastly, The Curious has a distinct focus on the house’s famed trunk, peppering miniature versions adorned with diamonds of the silhouette across each of the pieces.
