Ten’s To See: ‘Manchester Modern: Past Present Future’ At Victoria Baths

Linking up for a tremendous (and free!) exhibition exploring the rich history of Manchester’s creativity, Factory International and Chaos SixtyNine are the dream team. Aptly entitled “Manchester Modern: Past Present Future”, with the support of Chanel – which is staging its 2023/24 Métiers d’art show in the city tomorrow – it’s set to be an eye-opening showcase and it’s open this weekend only, December 8 to 10 at Victoria Baths, Manchester.

While Factory International is a global destination for arts, music and culture that works closely with its community located within the heart of ‘the Capital of the North’, Chaos SixtyNine is a magazine and editorial extension of freshly minted London-based luxury brand Chaos. Together, they’ve created something magical.

Intermixing photographers, musicians, poets, designers, craftspeople and spoken word artists, on display, discover a rich tapestry of works by British documentary photographer, photojournalist Martin Parr – who’s renowned for his vibrant, satirical and anthropological works –; English art director and graphic designer Peter Saville – often lauded for his record sleeve designs –; and BAFTA nominated writer, director and photographer Elaine Constantine – globally recognised for her effervescent and upbeat fashion imagery of self-assured young women.

Works by legendary English “punk poet”, comedian and rockstar John Cooper Clarke and Lemn Sissay – British author, broadcaster, official poet of the 2012 London Olympics and former chancellor of the University of Manchester – are also featured. Amongst others, all the artists whose visionary work weaves itself into the very fibres of the exhibition offer a unique perspective on the past and present of Manchester, before taking a step forward and imagining the future. Curated around celebrating Chanel’s place in Manchester (and its founder’s frequent stays at Eaton Hall – exhibition will unfold in tandem with the Parisian house’s next show as it prepares to stage an extraordinary takeover of the Northern Quarter streets. Don’t sleep on it.
