What’s not to love about cosy lush Max Mara served up first thing in the 17th century surroundings of the baroque Rotunda della Besana? Ian Griffiths had been musing on the ideas of conversation, the discussion of good ideas, the kind of age of Enlightenment set down by such inspirational women as Emilie du Chatelet. This translated as swaggering camel coats over generous man style pants; and of course some décolleté knits with sleek leather corset belts – a nod to the Marquise, a glimmer of her 1730s past maybe but all modern and made for now. The power of Max Mara lies within this refinement, it is defined by comfort and the deepest cashmere/ finest wool quality. Tactile alert. Full swagger at its most elegant extreme.
