Boramy Viguier: Menswear SS22

Through the pandemic, Parisian-based designer Boramy Viguier has thrived. In lieu of the catwalk, he has produced a slew of narrative-driven, enchanting fashion films – one of which was premiered as part of GucciFest – uniting his love for video games, mythology and surrealism in mystical, heroic fantasies. “Surprise can invite itself in the process,” says the designer over Zoom. “The starting point for the collection is always what kind of video I’m going to make.”

Skipping on the elaborate plots this time around, for SS22, Viguier was focused on evolving the traditional catwalk show. “I really thought about how we could make a video as interesting as a fashion show, but even more interesting, by showing what you cannot show in a fashion show.” A series of models running across the globe model this season’s looks, which includes tunics, tartan coats and oriental shirting. “It’s about emphasising the look,” he says, “when they are running you see the clothes moving, it creates a whole different mood for the garments.”

This season sees Viguier also introduce 1/1 One-of-a-kind, a new division of his brand which sees the designer craft unique pieces using second-hand clothes, ties the designer has collected and deadstock from his studio. “I just love the idea of creating pieces that are made just one time and you can’t really copy because it’s using upcycling,” he says. “It’s exclusive to the owner, to the buyer – that’s a touch of fashion that’s really important to me. I wish that fashion would attend to this more, as it used to.”
