Supriya Lele has spent the past five years making women feel at ease in their clothing. Taking elements of traditional Indian dress as seen through a distinct nineties, lo-fi lens, the Fashion East-alum has become synonymous for her light-as-a-feather, draped designs made of wispy chiffons which are layered, darted and twisted into form-flattering silhouettes.
Her trusted clientele – which includes everyone from Dua Lipa to Rihanna – turn to Lele when they want to feel at their best. So come winter, is there a more suited designer to dress a post-pandemic world? Trick question. Looking to the so-bad-it’s-good stylings of the early aughts, Lele envisions a slew of body-skimming fashions that could’ve easily dressed Paris, Lindsay or Nicole.
From bubblegum pink halterneck tops and rushed miniskirts with keyhole cut-outs, to lime green gauzy dresses slashed at the thigh, Lele has her sights set on the dancefloor. She manages to make traditional Indian floral patterns resemble 2000s tribal tattoos, seen across sensual flares, and turns her hand to crochet to create club-ready, barely-there bralettes – making for the sort of garb you want to be seen in come June 21.
