For trends to flourish, humans need to interact. It’s difficult for designers to predict what the world will be wearing next season when the world has spent the last year or so trapped indoors. Though in Paris and beyond, a sense of boozy excitement fills the air. Come June 21, people will be dancing in the streets, and brands across the board are turning to unashamedly hedonistic, going out-out clobber to dress a post-pandemic planet.
Paco Rabanne’s Julien Dossena is one of many designers turning to sparkle, shimmer and risqué hemlines has a soothing balm to get through Paris’ strict, 6pm Covid curfew. He dubs his AW21 collection, “an affirmation of decadence” – y’know, the sort of garb that comes with the soundtrack of a swooping champagne cork and leaves you with a sore head the morning after? His glistening vision for the season is occupied by in-your-face jewellery and mannish overcoats that will undoubtedly be chucked into club cloakrooms near and far. Underneath, Dossena’s girls will wear python-print frocks made of Paco Rabanne’s signature metal mesh and glorious seventies suiting, to dance till dawn in.
The designer presented his collection with a joyous fashion film that saw models jumping for joy, their fashions dancing as they glided in the air. They came smiling from ear-to-ear, and after watching, you’re bound to be left with a big, cheesy grin, yourself.
