With government guidelines insisting that all non-essential retail remains closed till further notice, a swanky new Louis Vuitton Men’s pop-up sits empty inside the halls of Selfridges. Originally set to open at the end of January, the space is dedicated to Virgil Abloh’s mammoth SS21 collection which was unveiled during a globe-trotting tour last summer – with stops in Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo.
Luckily for shoppers wanting to get their hands on a slice of the playful collection, Louis Vuitton is now offering virtual appointments for its die-hard customers. The dazzling display of tailoring on offer comes adorned in puppets and animal-like graphics that Abloh envisioned after researching a teddy bear Marc Jacobs designed in 2005 whilst at the house, as well as the Maroquinaris Zoologicae leather goods Billie Achilleos created for Louis Vuitton in 2011.
The joyous accessories come toe-to-toe with references to Abloh’s Ghanian heritage – such as the red, yellow and green colour combinations – with the designer using the sartorial codes imbedded in Louis Vuitton’s menswear to nod to the “African diaspora’s manifestation in cultures around the world.”
In unrelated pop-up news, Louis Vuitton has also this week launched a new fragrance this week. Titled Étoile Filante, the warming scent aims to unlock joyous memories through soothing notes of jasmine and Osmanthus.
