The Proenza Schouler boys aren’t the biggest fans of digitalised fashion week. “We were deprived of the material world and longed for touch,” wrote Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez – the brand’s founders – in a hand-signed note that came with their brand new book which houses their spring/summer 2021 collection. The pair couldn’t fathom the thought of the Proenza Schouler woman existing in a solely virtual space, or coded into a CGI being. Instead, the designers wanted to create a lasting material product that would become a relic of these extraordinary times.
Working closely with fellow New Yorker, the photographer Daniel Shea, Proenza Schouler wanted to pay tribute to the nocturnal city they call home. Tender, intimate lookbook shots starring Binx Walton and Saskia de Brauw are paired side-by-side with glimpses of shuttered corner shops, teenage skaters and flashes of New York’s skyline. The collection itself comes with the quiet confidence we’ve come to expect from the design duo. Expect rib-knit cardigan dresses and flares that pool over the ankle, worn with rather terrific puffy slippers. There’s also roomy nylon trenches, darted jersey dresses and leather suits in both blue and chocolate brown. These are the sort of pieces you want to rip off the page and stick straight into your wardrobe.
