Blast some Pat Benatar, wrap your hair in a scrunchy and whip out the running man – it’s time for a massive 1980s redux. The uniform? Fila’s comeback collection.
In 1979, the Italian sportswear brand clothed mountaineer Reinhold Messner for his Mount Everest expeditions, and nine years later they released a skiwear collection inspired by his sky-high ascents. And now, thirty years after the collection came out, Fila are relaunching the brand with a heritage-inspired capsule collection that’s putting all of those elements into one. Bold prints, a colourway worthy of the Fresh Prince himself and some pretty signature silhouettes – it’s like one of those Best Of compilation disks from 1986 came to life in the form of a fashion collection.
Designed with the help of vintage dealer Ollie Evans of cult retail destination Too Hot, the collection is based on the pieces sourced from the dusty shelves of warehouses across Italy. After the success of the Fendimania collection inspired by Fila’s logo, a revival of this 100-year-old brand seems like the obvious next step. Glossing up your usual vintage codes and making them feel as relevant as ever, the collection is called after the original Messner-inspired one – the name is Magic Line, and there’s definitely a lot of magic around it. Abrakadabra – get us one of each!
The Magic Line colleciton by Fila is launching today online and at Selfridges, London.
