Forget about flyers or posters – murals are the next big thing. If you’ve been walking around Milan, New York, Hong Kong or down London’s Brick Lane in the past few days, you might have seen a giant portrait of a dark-haired woman gracing a side of a building. That’s Marina Abramovic, the famed Serbian artist, whose 2010 MoMA exhibition The Artist is Present repositioned the way we look at performance art completely. Now this is where it all gets a bit complicated. The Gucci murals are not actually promoting Abramovic’s exhibition, but Maurizio Catellan’s one that is launching on October 11th in Shanghai. The Italian’s show is also called The Artist is Present and focuses on the practice of copying and appropriation in the many forms it takes in contemporary culture. A bit of a Inception situation, right? Well, that’s contemporary art for all of you.
