Marques’Almeida: Ready-to-Wear AW18

In case anyone was questioning whether we were power women, Marques’Almeida have spelt it out, quite literally. For their AW18 collection Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida were fuelled by their responsibility to create clothes with a relevancy behind them. “We hope to empower generations of girls to do great things.” And so on the Leake Street Arches videos of women played, “If I had a daughter I would want her to know that it’s okay to be who you are, and to be super unapologetic about it.” These girls were unashamed, strong, ready to put up a fight. Just how we like ‘em.

There was a casual drama to it, burnt orange velvet so slinky, puffball skirts hung low, hands firm in motocross style leather jackets and pants – both emblazoned with the brands initials M/A – and flat strapped leather boots were ready to kick some ass. In a clever collaboration with Louise Gray they got straight to the point, statements written on shirts and jumpers, reading, “Open your own door,” and “Truth + Beauty.” Do we even need to discuss the diversity in their casting? It was one of their talking points but really, this is just how it should be. SZA’s ‘Supermodel’ remixed was what they walked to, “I’m writing this letter to let you know I’m really leaving, and no, I’m not keeping your shit.” Yeah, they got attitude. These women were ready to step out of the house and get what they want, what they need. Power women, obvs.
