A far cry from the bikini-clad, beach-lounging, babe-aganza that you might think of when you hear the words “Pirelli Calendar” – this year’s edition, shot by brilliant Tim Walker and styled by the equally brilliant Edward Enninful, shows just how far it’s come. Choosing to re-imagine Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ with an all-black cast, it’s an apt theme according to Enninful: “given the state of the world we live in, sometimes I think we all feel like we’ve fallen down the rabbit hole. For me, a retelling of ‘Alice’ for the modern world was a perfect project, particularly once the cast fell into place.”
And my my what a cast: Naomi Campbell, Whoopi Goldberg, RuPaul and Puff Daddy all feature in Wonderland fantasy, which, for Tim Walker, was an important statement:”The story of Alice has been told so many times and in so many ways, but always with a white cast…there has never been a black Alice, so I wanted to push how fictional fantasy figures can be represented and explore evolving ideas of beauty.” Roll on January.
