At Ten Towers, we are collectively obsessed with Oscars speeches. They’re our favourite thing. After the red carpet extravaganza, obviously. And this year’s speeches were nothing short of inspirational, tear-jerking and a little bit awkward (referring to the Best Picture slip-up – more ahead). So here’s our top five from the evening – see them as a little ray of light of a Monday morning. First up, Anousheh Ansari (the first Iranian in space!) accepting on behalf of Asghar Farhadi for Best Foreign Film The Salesman, probably the most powerful because Asghar himself wasn’t able to attend the ceremonies because of Trump’s immigration ban. There were tears. Next, Viola Davis for Best Supporting Actress in Fences. We love Viola, she is an icon. And she gives, as it were, good speech. Watch it above. Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Moonlight and seeing a grown man display that sort of emotion had me something close to breakdown this morning. Number four – La La Land.. er, no, sorry MOONLIGHT for Best Picture. iI really doesn’t get much more awkward than announcing the wrong winner for anything, let alone Best Picture at the Oscars… Like, we feel bad for the La La Land cast, but Moonlight was bloody great and anyone who’s seen it will know why they won. Finally, Emma Stone for Best Actress, who did the thing that all good Oscar winners should do – namely, thank the other nominees. Acknowledge the greatness. Watch all the speeches above…
