Francesco Scognamiglio: Ready-to-wear AW17

When chanteuse Mariah Carey sung “spread your wings and prepare to fly, for you have become a butterfly, so flutter through the sky, butterfly, spread your wings and fly, butterfly” was she, in fact, preempting Francesco Scognamiglio’s AW17 collection? Probably not, but the reason we evoke this lyrics is because this collection was also, according to the notes, inspired by the butterfly. About emerging from that dark old cocoon of yours and becoming the beautiful flying insect that you really are, which, in this case, would be a real-life lady butterfly. Madame Butterfly? Which meant a bit of a sexier take on the in the take on the insect that we’re used to. Less girly. There were thighs, boobs and hip. Cut-out red velvet in patterns that echoed the markings on a butterfly’s wings, sheer spotted gowns that fell away to ruffles at the hem, photographic close-ups of wings, printed on to dresses . And an amazing blush coloured finale gown, shimmering with silver sparkles like the wings of a moth. Francesco always brings the drama. And you all know how much we love drama.
