Coach: Ready-to-wear SS17

Stuart Vevers put on a show last night for Coach SS17. This was roadside America. The Southwest. Centre stage? A pile up centre stage of old chevvies and cadillacs. Which was his inspiration, apparently. Well, more specifically, the work of American photog Joel Sternfeld, whose images document the barren landscapes of the US. These Coach girls were tough. Heavy chains on handbags and studded, spiky creepers. The kind of shoes that could administer a short sharp kick if needed. You wouldn’t want to mess with them. “The toughness and rebellion of biker gangs, made special with Southwestern fringing and metal details,” was the feel, Vevers told us backstage. But there was something girly about it do – floral-print prairie dresses, appliqué flowers on the bags. Because the Coach girl can do both. What more could you want in a lady? So where exactly was she going? “This season I pictured the Coach girl in the Southwest, loves Elvis, wears her Sunday best with a rebellious Rockabilly sensibility,” Mr Vevers. Our kind of Sunday best.
