Versace: Pre-Spring 2017

“The big Versace adventure – a road trip from coast to coast, from city to sun,” so the attached notes say of Donatella Versace’s latest Pre-Spring collection. A journey through the American heartland. A road trip out west – from New York to Los Angeles, by way of the prairie fields of the midwest. But not in that cowboy-slash-stars-and-stripes kind of a way. No, this is about freedom. The open road. Girls on the run. “This is a collection about the freedom the Versace woman has in her life, a freedom she has fought for, and which she cherishes,” says Donatella Versace. There’s nipped-in tailoring for the city girl, illuminated with flashes of electric blue and yellow, blending into micro florals (the “blur of the prairie from an open-top car”, apparently) and then into a kind of dress-cum-polo shirt hybrid inspired by the various colours of a Californian sunset. And the shoes? Well, remember those walking sandals your Dad wore on holiday? Imagine them, were they to mate with a seven inch platform. Ah-mazing. Dominic reckons that this is a bit futuristic sporty spice, “because like, she used to do all those tricks and flips and stuff, and this looks like you could do that in them”. See, freedom. We’re into it.
