Gilbert & George at the White Cube

Gilbert & George live the life that I have long dreamed of. No, not the life of award-winning, millionaire artists. But life without a kitchen. Which means they must eat out for every meal. Imagine, every single one. What luxury! In George’s word’s “because it wastes so much time, shopping and washing up, disposing of waste. We keep our brains for the more important things. We only have an electric kettle.” Having been told off by Dominic for wasting food by not doing a weekly shop, this seems like the perfect solution. Anyway, I think of Gilbert & George today because their latest exhibition has opened this week at the White Cube gallery in Bermondsey. It’s called “The Banners”, made up of protest-like placards with Gilbert & George’s rules for life scrawled upon them. In the White Cube’s artsy words, “hard-hitting slogans to address belief and conformism with a straightforward and uncompromising visual language.” We have to say, peering into the picture of the exhibition that we have, most of them could just as easily be found upon the walls of Ten Towers. Particularly “FELLATIO FOR ALL” “DECRIMINALISE SEX” and “FUCK HIM”. Oo-er!
