It turns out the the man Madonna was singing about in Express Yourself was none other than Francois Nars, international make-up artist and purveyor of the brightest colours this side of digital augmentation. Yes, when the Vogue-ing one spoke of “a big strong hand/ to lift you to your higher ground/ make you feel like a queen on a throne” she meant the hand of Mr Nars, wielding a sharp-angled lip brush, ready to make us feel good.
But then if you’ve been listening to Madge carefully and heeding her words, you’ll also know that you don’t need a man to make you feel good, oh no, no. And this message hasn’t escaped Mr Nars either; he has created a book of bible-like proportions – and called Express Yourself – to teach you the skills so you can make yourself feel like a queen on a throne whenever his big strong hands aren’t around. Totally proves that they’ve been working in cahoots.
