Matthew Williams has no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As the designer celebrates his first anniversary as Givenchy’s creative director, he headed to the Italian volcanic beaches of Stromboli to showcase his new 1017 Alyx 9SM SS22 collection, dubbed Beyond.
Williams is known for pushing the boundaries between garment construction and technical innovation, and he communicates this disreputable energy strolling through beach coasts and atop high volcanic mountains. The designer now sets his sights on comfort and ease, a big change from past collections. SS22 sees Williams take shirt dresses constructed from bathing suit stretch fabrics, setting them alongside a series of hand-beaded tops, dresses, and skirts. In classic Alyx style, these hand-beaded pieces feature over 18 thousand beads and are affixed by over 320 meters of luxury thread.
Alongside an evolution of the brand’s Mono Slip-On, the collection features shell leather vests and jackets, leather and transparent parkas, lightweight breasted coats paired with formal tailoring pants, and the brand’s iconic silver hardware, this time, remixed with leather elements. Whether it’s Stromboli beaches or inner city life, Matthew Williams is dressing tomorrow.
