Welcome to the very first issue of our dedicated 10+ beauty supplement. Its pages are a playground for creativity and self-expression, a place where you can make yourself up, quite literally. On the cover is make-up extraordinaire and mastermind behind Isamaya Beauty, Isamaya Ffrench. Shot by Josie Hall and styled by Rubina Vita Marchiori, with creative direction from Isamaya Ffrench and make-up by Tash Sultana.
What can you expect from inside? Our editor, Claudia Croft, pens the 10+ beauty testimony:
The late, great Vivienne Westwood once told us the secret to her high self- esteem. “I put my make-up on in the morning in a very flattering mirror,” she said. “And then I don’t look at myself again for the rest of the day.” Dame Viv knew that a reflection can be your biggest boost and most brutal bully, and she took control of the situation.
Of all the creative spheres, beauty is the most personal, but also the most dynamic. This issue celebrates entrepreneurs, innovators and trailblazers, people who are redefining our values, redrawing our faces and re-energising our idea of self. People like make-up superstar Isamaya Ffrench, who drenches herself in slick and shine for her glorious wet-look cover shoot, or the make-up artist and Dolce & Gabbana muse Celine Bernaerts, who takes us into the realms of cosmetic fantasy. Along the way, we spotlight the best young brands and sustainable stand-outs, then explore how quiet luxury has entered the beauty sphere.
Your relationship with your with face is lifelong and in this issue Dame Zandra Rhodes takes us through the evolution of her signature hair and make-up look. “I like being pink, it makes me feel like myself. A lot of things to do with identity are what make you feel good and brighten up your day,” says the fuchsia-haired design deity. From electric blue eyeshadow (her favourite is by MAC) to experimenting with different brow designs, the ritual of putting on her face is more than just habit. It goes to the heart of who she is. “If one is a character, then a signature look is something that sticks with you and helps you through the good and even the bad times. Even if you’re feeling awful, your signature make-up look makes you feel together. Particularly the older you get, the more these things are important and you feel that you’re retaining your face to the world.” Beauty’s true power lies not in its demand for perfection or conforming to a certain standard but in amplifying that sense of self.
