LA folk like a slash in their job title. One vocation simply isn’t enough, it seems.
In the case of the French recording artist-cum-actress Soko, that slash is genuinely needed, as the two seem to organically intertwine. “I love telling stories in whatever shape or form, whether it’s through songs, movies, acting or music,” she explains before divulging her own LA tale.
Why did you move to LA?
“I was living in Seattle six years ago, planning on moving to New York. It was about to be winter and I had a very intense dream and then woke up. I don’t know quite why, but I called the only person I knew in LA and told him I was moving there the next day and cancelling all my New York plans. He thought I was crazy and would never do it. I stayed with him for a few days, instantly fell in love with the weather and lifestyle and then found my own place and the rest is history.”
What’s your favourite things to do in LA?
“Going to Cinespia at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Having a picnic and watching movies in the cemetery every Saturday night all summer long with all my friends.”
How would you define yourself?
“I’m a cat and a lover, and I’m good at cuddles.”
Why did you decide to do what you do?
“Music makes me happy, it helps me exorcise all my demons and go on with my life a little bit more peacefully.”
What would you say are the essentials to becoming famous in your profession?
“Fame is not the ‘goal’, making art is.”
What do you do for fun?
“Sleep. Watch cartoons. Listen to music. Do yoga. Pet kittens, have adventures, play music, go to shows, play, play, play and stay a kid forever.”
Is there anything you would like to do but never seem to have the time?
“Laundry.”
What is the most ridiculous rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself? Is it true?
“That I’m a ‘modeliser’ and yes, uh, hmm, eek, I might be a little guilty of doing that.”
Have you “arrived’?
“I wrote a song called We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow and it’s pretty much how I live my life. So I try to do as much things as possible and live with the thought that, if I die tomorrow, I die fulfilled and my life has been wonderful. So yep, I feel pretty content. I’ve been going after every single one of my dreams.”
Have you been to Disneyland? What was your favourite ride?
“Yes. I’m such a kid, I’m obsessed with Disney movies and Disneyland. My favourite ride is Neverland, of course. I’m obsessed with Peter Pan. I have Peter Pan syndrome.”
Health food or champagne?
“I’m a health freak.”
