Oh, Yohji. How you delight us each season. We may not always understand – but is that not the very joy of it all? Apparently this Spring collection, those draped silhouettes, twisted and tied in that oh-so-masterful way, was about climate change. A fact we read afterwards, we must admit. But then it somehow made sense – the full skirted dresses ravaged by high winds, exposing the crinoline beneath, those giant precarious parasols. “Earth is angry, the summer is too hot and the rain becomes a storm. And in hot times, we need underwear in the streets,” Yohji said after the show. But somehow the message was secondary – this was about the clothes, a look backwards at all those Yamamoto tropes that have defined his long career. It was a thoughtful reflection – an introspective retrospective, if you will.
