Maggie Maurer Wears Vivienne Westwood on The First Cover of our Celebratory Issue 64, Here Joined by The Editor’s Letter

Introducing the first of the four covers of our celebratory Issue 64 aptly titled Best, Foot, Forward. It’s the height of eccentric glamour in the form of Maggie Maurer in Vivienne Westwood by Andreas Kronthaler, shot by Cedric Buchet and styled by our Editrix-in-heels and spiritual mother of all Tenners, Lady Sophia Neophitou. Here’s her editor’s letter explaining the ethos behind the grand anniversary issue, celebrating two decades of our wonderful universe:

“This time 20 years ago, a little idea began. A seed was planted and grew, culminating in the launch of 10 Magazine. The idea was to have an environment that celebrated young talent. A home for all the gifted young creatives, designers, photographers and writers. An environment for them all to shine.

This 20-year adventure began as a pure moment of desire to propel forward and make an environment, a world where creativity is the principle and singular motivation always.

Twenty years on, I really wanted to have a discussion about how we see ourselves moving forward as creatives.

In the light of so much change necessary to save our world, how will we, in our industry, step up to the plate and put our best foot forward? It has become a mantra for this issue – “putting our best foot forward” in every way we can. It was a huge undertaking that triggered so many questions about what we need to do to change the course of events. Changes must be applied permanently to all our processes, so this issue and all future issues will be printed on paper that is sustainably sourced (PEFC paper made from sustainably managed forests) in our efforts to make a difference.

We have to find ways to make things better, going forward, and address the questions of sustainability, diversity, inclusivity and the eradication of prejudice. We are still part of this system and so we do have a responsibility to be part of the solution.

For the issue, we spoke to truly inspiring young activists whose future depends on our actions now. We desperately need to change the narrative.

That said, I still believe it is important to inspire and, as the brilliant Alice Wilby puts it, “The fashion shoot is an important tool to inspire, change and future-proof the fashion industry.”

So this does mean we have to take a responsible attitude towards making the permanent changes necessary across the board, in our casting, addressing and incorporating a responsible attitude always to diversity, inclusion and sustainability. And we need to find ways to celebrate initiatives and individuals who can pave the way for us all, from whom we can learn and grow and make things better in everything we do, big and small.

The most enlightened lessons I have learnt from creating the issue were from a key piece about teenagers in their bedrooms, young activists with so much conviction, determination and focus they just humbled me. This group of young people are, in fact, those we should look to, to help us all grow and learn so much more. It is encouraging to see (in a recent McKinsey survey of US consumers) that Gen Z are far more likely to pay more for an item with a less negative impact on the environment than older generations, so I really do feel the future of fashion is full of hope in their hands. I am so grateful for the opportunities this issue has given me to educate myself and grow in my own processes.

Having created this magical world 20 years ago, I am thankful every day for the freedom it grants me creatively to have the right discussions and continue to question myself and evolve.

Thank you to my tireless team, my Tenners, past and present, the alumni who have always helped me realise all the dreams and ideas. Without these wondrous, brilliant, precious individuals, none of this journey would ever have been possible, nothing would have been realised. More of that in the September issue.

Please read everything – there’s so much to get your teeth into. Thank you always for your support. Without it, we wouldn’t be here, 20 years on. Here’s to the next 20 years.”

Issue 64 – BEST, FOOT, FORWARD – is on newsstands February 6th.
