Donatella Versace isn’t anything if not a pioneer and rightfully reminded us on Friday night that she is, in fact, the queen of corsetry. A predominant trend at the Milan shows so far – see Fendi, Blumarine, Emporio Armani, No. 21 – “the unmistakable Atelier Versace bustier is at the collection’s core” read the show notes. From suiting to satin mini dresses, leather coats to LBDs, it featured in each of the 60 looks on display, reinvented in tweed, dogstooth, denim and silk, embellished with rhinestones and dripping with chains.
This was, as ever, Donatella’s love letter to women. “Never shy or retiring, the Versace woman for AW22 has a powerful and seductive sense of mystery…with unapologetic certainty, she fully owns her allure and knows exactly when to unleash her power”. Adut Akech, Precious Lee, Avanti Nagrath, Emily Ratajkowski and Gigi and Bella Hadid were out in force to do the unleashing in a casting that was representative of the brand’s “new-generation attitude,” with an emphasis on diversity, relayed Donatella. Joining the hot-house symphony of silhouettes, the designer also introduced a casual note. Coated denim, cropped puffa jackets and knit co-ords featuring the Greca motif joined this season’s Versace tee that stated: “I love you, but I’ve chosen Versace”. How apt.
