Stella McCartney: Ready-To-Wear AW22

Stella McCartney looked to the abstract grandeur of Frank Stella for a collection that she described as “effortlessly wearable art”. His graphic, geometric lines snaked across velvet suits and zigzagged around the body in enveloping knit pieces, whilst his Spectralia inspired the prints. There were cut out jersey dresses and denim jackets with sweetheart necklines, playing the artist’s linear aesthetic against McCartney’s femininity.

As always, McCartney pushed the boundaries of sustainable and eco materials with forest-friendly viscose, organic cotton, recycled nylon, recycled polyester, regenerative NATIVA wool and RWS wool from traceable sources. Like many designers, she found a way to address the war in Ukraine and used her shoe as a plea for peace. As guests took their seats, she played snatches of JFK’s famous, 1963 speech on peace, where he argued for “not merely peace in our time but peace in all time,” and closed her show with the Beatles anthem “Give Peace a Chance”.
