Designer Michael Halpern has shown that the power of glamour needn’t start and end with a personal moment of triumph. It can be political, it can be deployed for the greater good. As well as delivering mega-watt looks, his pandemic fashion films had a social context including uplifting NHS workers, and he continued in that vein.
Showing in Brixton Rec, he upgraded the electricity supply for the community that use the space. His clothes meanwhile spoke to a sophisticated glamour, inspired by his eternal muse Angelica Houston and the Cecil B. DeMille epic Madam Satan, which he watched during lockdown. The lean, elegant, twenties/seventies silhouettes will please his clients (private orders are booming) and with the addition of a wedding dress, he staked his claim on the bridal market. It’s all about the feel-good factor.
