The age-old idea that sex sells has always worked for Christopher Kane. The Scottish fashion titan was sorely missed as the London shows sprung back to life this season. In place of a physical show, he stuck to a fashion film, with models walking against colourful backdrops. The vivid, primary hues served well in accenting Kane’s cuts and textures, which played with subversive undertones.
Kink and naturalistic sexuality have long informed Kane’s design lexicon, This season, the designer looked at how male species change shape and colour to intrigue a mate in the wild.
In a fashion context, this translates to muti-coloured strips of tulle bandaged together to make a harnessed, knee-length dress, shown alongside faux-fur trimmed coats and obscure, triangular skirts decorated in fringe. Crystal mesh spoke of signature Kane-isms, as did wipe clean skirts and cut-out frocks clung tightly to the body with gold chain detailing. Whilst the brand’s More Joy merch line might be about dressing the everyday, these pieces deserve a sense of occasion.
