Chanel: Couture SS22

Chanel never fails to put on an epic show – leaving us with the desire to be more elegant, more refined, and now, to take horse riding lessons. Let’s unpack the haute couture show that just happened in Paris. Creative director Virginie Viard worked with artist Xavier Veilhan to envision a set inside Grand Palais Éphémère that was part landscape, part garden, part horse ranch: equipped with sand equestrian rings and sculptures.

Showjumper Charlotte Casiraghi – daughter of Princess Caroline of Hanover – looked regal opening the show on the back of a giant horse. Dressed in black tweed, as you do, she confidently rode around the stage and then picked up speed, giving us a little gallop as she exited.

The collection featured tweeds in the most delicious shades of pink, yellow, black, navy and cream. What followed was a procession of gowns that toyed with the construction of classic evening dresses – with Viard utilising each of the house’s specialist embroiderers for the collection.

Standouts included a black-featured dress with a low back, a jewel-encrusted strapped dress in yellow lace and the bride, pared-back in a loosely-cut silk frock accented with no veil. This is a couture collection suited to the demands of today.
