All the Milanese cool girls love Brognano. They’re so cool in fact, you won’t find them frowing at fashion week – you’ll be lucky if they even turn up to the after-party. Instead, they wear their frilly, pretty-girl frocks on their own accord, whether it’s heading down to the local café or simply trawling the streets of Milan; searching for their next adventure. For AW20 however, designer Nicola Brognano was less frill-er, and more killer – crafting a slew of looks “defined by cohabiting opposites.” Was he inspired by Paula Abdul’s seminal smash Opposites Attract? Maybe so. Brognano clashed textures, staples, and hues in an effort to “finally free” his woman from “pointless restrictions brought by definitions,” said the show notes.
Carefully curated collisions saw the likes of turquoise eco-leather twin-sets paired with satin ballet-pumps in a softer hue; slinky slip dresses worn over formal shirting with knee-high ketchup-y red boots; and modest dresses with diamanté fringing. Though as Abdul sang back in 1989, with every two steps forward, there’s two-step back. Brognano still couldn’t let go of his signature tulle creations for good. The fabric looked fantastic accenting rugged leather shirting, as it did when trimming suit jackets and trousers. And of course, there were dresses. Pretty pink, pale peach and cherry red frilled frocks closed out the show. We’re sure those very same cool girls will be magnified to these beauties when autumn rolls around.
