Anyone who recalls when Shu Uemura was still sold in the UK will know the feeling of lusting after must-have make-up brushes – and if I were to find myself in Japan tomorrow, you’d likely find me indulging in a spot of Shu shopping. Or… would you? Because Victoria Beckham may just have come up with the most gotta-have-them cosmetic brushes in my living memory. These brushes are so special that they can satiate any of my previous and long-held desires.
Not only are these gorgeous (and vegan) makeup tools, but Mrs Beckham has managed to also turn them into sculptural objects in their own right. Seriously, you won’t want to be hiding these in jars in your bathroom or leave them to wallow, picking up lint, in the bottom of your makeup bag. These are so splendid you’ll be tempted to invite friends round to dinner and display them as if you just acquired your own Koons. They’re that enticing.
“I’ve always been drawn to beautiful objects that are as striking to look at as they are a joy to use,” confirms Mrs B. “I created each brush as its own sculptural work of art, engineered to match my specific personal makeup techniques and to feel like a natural extension of my hand.”
This means that the elegant carved walnut handles (topped with synthetic bristles) not only look great but are also ergonomically designed to rest in the hand so they can be best deployed to maximum effect. And it’s a concise edit of tools with the entire Brush Collection, inspired by the arts of calligraphy and painting, making its debut with nine brush heads designed to cover all of the essentials: Conceal & Detail, Buffer, Sculpt & Blend, Fan, Powder, Soft blend, Buff & Smudge, Define & Line, Detailed Lip.
Of course, you wouldn’t expect Beckham to play favourites with her own creations. “These brushes really give the precision and versatility I crave in my makeup routine,” she says of the range. But she does share some tips about a couple of them… “For my eyeliner, I love the Define & Line Brush because it was designed to be so precise. Every tiny detail was considered to give complete control, allowing for the sharpest, most intentional strokes. For the face, I reach for The Sculpt & Blend Brush a lot because it’s incredibly versatile. It’s perfect for sculpting, but I also use it on my eyes to give shape. It’s one of those brushes that does so much, which is something I that was really important to me for this collection – every brush has a real purpose.”
And now my real purpose is to get my hands on them. I’ll race you – but fair warning, I mean business. Shop the collection here.
