Thom Browne shows are feasts of the imagination. The designer is a great and witty storyteller. His winter wonderland set looked like a fashion Narnia, guarded by male models in kilts and beautifully-crafted animal masks. Pigs, crocodiles, horses… His models came out two by two, layering a Noah’s Arc motif on top of the fairytale setting. The boy-girl pairs wore matching looks and carried ingenious leather animal bags. Everything was unisex and as with anything Thom Browne, the craft on display was second to none. The little animal motifs that danced across a tailored coat were all individually inlaid into the fabric. A coat was encrusted from collar to waist with bugle beads embroidered to match the Prince of Wales check of the garment. Browne was in the mood to experiment. A pair of men’s trousers was wrapped around the torso to make a bustier for both sexes and skirts were fashioned from fully tailored jackets stitched together. Browne’s design vocabulary is strict but within it, he is incredibly inventive.
