The Vivienne Foundation Launches T-Shirts Project

Say it with your chest, say it with Westwood.

Today, The Vivienne Foundation launches its first project since Dame Viv’s passing. A special run of 500 made-to-order T-shirts – each featuring one out of four of Westwood’s most legendary designs – are available to pre-order now. All profits from the sales will be donated four grassroots organisations that align with the principles on which the not-for-profit was founded, including climate change, preventing war, defending human rights and protesting capitalism. Founded by Westwood in 2019, the Foundation was predominantly used as a vehicle for raising awareness on these issues until the designer’s passing in 2022. In 2023, the Foundation joined forces with Campaign Against Arms Trade, War Child and Refugee Council to launch its first campaign, focused on fundraising for those affected by war across the globe. Now, comes the Foundation’s first official project since its inauguration, by way of these very special tees.

As we navigate how best to present, produce and distribute such precious and important designs – with the voice of Vivienne ringing in our ears saying ‘just get on with it’ – we wanted to take a first step forward with some of the many things she left behind,” the Foundation said in a statement.

The four prints on offer come from the expansive VW archive. The Tits and Cowboys prints pay homage to the designer’s punk origins, lifted from graphics created alongside her then-partner Malcom McLaren for their famed Sex boutique in the mid 1970s. The Tits print comes in two iterations; one in black and the other in blue.

The other two designs, Teddy Bear and Baby Satyr, also mark significant chapters in the history of Westwood’s eponymous brand, with the former inaugurated in the 1988 collection Britain Must Go Pagan and the latter originating in the 1990s. At that time, Baby Satyr first appeared embroidered across various pairs of gloves before continuing to pop up across Westwood’s vast design portfolio, with the Foundation calling it “the culmination of a lifetime’s work.”

The launch has been generously supported by many who knew and loved Westwood, including Nick Knight, who shot the accompanying campaign remotely as a means of adhering to the late designer’s commitment to cost-conscious creativity, and the SHOWstudio team. Kate Moss, 10 Magazine 25 anniversary cover star Colin Jones, Westwood’s granddaughter Cora Corré and Fontaines D.C‘s Deego have been enlisted to star in the campaign.

The designs are now available to pre-order via the Foundation’s website. Order yours here.
