Copenhagen-based home and sleepwear company Tekla has joined forces with environmental non-profit Client Earth and German photographer Lena C. Emery for a special exhibition addressing climate change. Open today, the three-day-long display is being shown at Frieze’s first permanent exhibition space, No.9 Cork Street, and is open to the public.
Having kicked off with a fundraising event yesterday, with any donations going to Client Earth’s efforts to legally challenge international policies that negatively affect the environment, the expo showcases Emery’s image series, The Mountains Between Us. Highlighting how global warming is causing Switzerland’s Rhône Glacier to melt rapidly, the moody snaps document the surreality of the once sprawling landscape, which, having formerly been the largest glacier in Europe, now stands as only the fifth largest in the country. Showcasing how environmentalists have draped specific geotextiles over the ice caps in a desperate attempt to slow their change, the images fuse photography and sculpture to hold up a harsh mirror to how the once massive structures are shrinking with each rolling year.
Aiming to raise awareness about the disastrous impact of climate change, Emery’s work has been recognised over the years for its poignancy and in 2021, she was awarded the Decade of Change Award. Conceived by the British Journal of Photography, the award highlights the power of artistic expression in conveying galvanising narratives relating to environmental action. Uniting artists, media and members of the wider creative community to generate much-needed funds and awareness for Client Earth and its goals, Emery’s work tug on your heartstrings more than any banal statistic ever could. The exhibition is free to attend and it’s not one to miss.
