Ten’s To See: Scarlet Griffiths’ ‘Scratch’ At Allotment Gallery

Multi-disciplinary artist Scarlet Griffiths isn’t interested in an image in its complete form. Intrigued instead by how the image can be distorted, she uses her latest exhibition to etch and score a selection of her own photos, taken over the course of the past five years. Aptly named Scratch, the display is taking place in East London’s Allotment Gallery and will run from today until October 26.

A continuation of her studies at Slade School of Fine Art, which she graduated from in 2023, Scratch focuses on disrupting the image, not as a way of erasing it, but to emphasise how this can reveal a deeper meaning. Delicate and individual, there is an intimacy in Griffith’s technique, as the tiny, repetitive scratches nod to a further depth beneath each photo. For Griffiths, a photo possesses much more than what meets the eye, and she wants her viewers to ask the question, ‘what lies beneath?’

In conjunction with the exhibition, Griffiths has released an album featuring local artists such as Fergus Jones, Big Hands and Soreab. All producing tracks that feature samples of Griffiths reading self-penned poetry, the album speaks to yet another one of the artist’s passions – music. A co-founder of Kindred, a Farringdon-based radio station and record shop, Griffiths uses this platform to explore creativity in all its forms, designing apparel, selling photography books and curating club nights. As a result, Griffiths has also created a book, featuring over 300 scratched images, that will be launched at the opening of the exhibition.

A culmination of years of work and an exploration of both visual and sonic mediums, Scratch is a must-see showcase to add to your weekend calendar. Discover the display here.
