When I think of red, I think of Tina Carlyle, aka Cameron Diaz in the 1994 film The Mask. I think specifically of the scene where Miss Carlyle slo-mo struts through the bank to have a chat with Stanley Ipkiss about opening a new account. In this scene, she is wearing a skintight, low-cut, high-split red dress. Her lips are velvety, cheeks lightly blushed and her nails are glossy. All red. She is a rouge goddess of the 1990s screen. We later learn that the wolf in babe’s clothing was only batting lashes at the banker so she could suss out the layout and give her crook of a boyf back home the lowdown for a stick-up. Global creative makeup and colour designer at Chanel, Lucia Pica, who created the new Le Rouge Collection No1 for AW16, said that “strength, emotion, warmth and disruption” come to mind when she thinks of red, a colour with which she’s had a long-term obsession. Carlyle is the ultimate combination of this, while embodying all of red’s other associations – passion, danger, desire and, of course, love (the latter coming from poor old Ipkiss). Through channelling her infatuation with colour and creating an entirely red collection, Pica has redefined red’s use within beauty. Team Ten recommend you channel Carlyle with your Chanel Beauty. Use a light hand, mind – leave the mask for Ipkiss.
