It’s every brand’s dream to create a silhouette that becomes so beloved by its customer base it can withstand the ever-turning tide of the seasons. This year, Loewe is celebrating that dream coming true as its revered Puzzle bag turns 10. Having become a staple in the wardrobes of industry veterans and front-row newbies alike, the Puzzle bag’s geometric silhouette has undoubtedly stood the test of time since debuting on Loewe’s SS15 womenswear runway. To put that into perspective, that’s pre-COVID, pre-TikTok and pre-ChatGPT. In other words, the world was a completely different place. In today’s climate, where microtrends are intent on torpedoing anything with longevity, reaching 10 years is something worth commemorating. And so, the house is doing this the best way it knows how; releasing 19 new Puzzle bags, of course.
Crafted using classic techniques from Loewe’s Spanish ateliers, like appliqué, embroidery, cross-stitch and leather marquetry, each bag is a re-edition from the past decade and features a commemorative metal plaque and two Loewe balloon charms hanging from the handle. Catering to the needs of its expansive and diverse fanbase, each re-edition has its own distinct style. The Manga-maniac can cop the Anime iteration with Japanese-inspired animations printed onto metallic leather. Those with sportier styles are catered to with the sports-shoe-inspired Varsity, whilst those planning on basking in the sun on a Spanish island this summer have the option of the Paula’s Ibiza Kiwi or the Paula’s Ibiza Parrot. The self-explanatory Patchwork, Polka, Cowboy, Plumeria, Tartan and Pixel are also available, as well as versions inspired by artistic legends of the past like William Morris and Joe Brainard.
Every single base is covered, including for those looking for something completely new. Enter the Confetti, a joyous interpretation of Lara Favaretto’s Midsommar – a cube made out of confetti that sat proudly at Loewe’s AW23 women’s runway. Coated in metal or leather and multicoloured sequins of the pastel and metallic variety, it’s celebration, innovation, craft and creativity all rolled into one pretty-looking package.
For those picky Puzzle-lovers who want to get a closer look, Harrods is hosting a pop-up that will open tomorrow and run until June 22. Inspired by the aesthetics embraced by Casa Loewe, the space will feature metallic tiled walls with velvet linings as well as six themed exterior windows inspired by the same artists that inspired the bags. If you’re a little peckish, there will also be a Loewe van serving coffee and puzzle-shaped chocolate. Now that’s how to celebrate a birthday!
