Ten Commandments: The Tomasini Handbag

10C6’Tis a well-known fact that red, especially offset with black, acts like a warning. It says “Do not approach” to would-be prey in the wild. And as it sits diametrically opposite to green on the colour spectrum, it’s the most likely colour to stand out against foliage as protection for, say, insects. Red spells danger! There’s something dangerous about this handbag, too. It comes in a new-wave style, that smart period after punk that played around with geometric patterns, when peg trousers were worn with slim red leather belts, and so on. Red and black had such a new power back then and people resembled constructivist posters. This bag has a barstool glamour to it also, and would be really at home propped next to a cocktail. We’re all crossing bags at the moment, but consider this perched on a shoulder-pad look. It’s a far chicer gesture. And with the correct width of shoulder pad, it absolutely won’t fall off. Let’s all start going out and dressing up again and being really, really jzuhzy. The bag is made up of leather strips sewn together – the belcher-style chain ramps up the glamour. Imagine you’re a guest on Top of the Pops in 1982: the bottom of your bag should hit the hips exactly. Preferably just above the waist of a tube skirt worn with fishnets and unforgivably spiky heels.
