I love Miyajima’s work; the endless counting down LEDs in works such as ‘Sea of Time’ and ‘Pile Up Life’ mesmerise and terrify me in equal measure. In his latest work, ‘Time Train’ shown at Comme des Garcons Six in Japan, a model of a train that actually ran in Germany between 1932 and 1945 is fitted with blue blinking LEDs, and appears to run forever, with neither a point of departure nor a destination. I’ll leave you to ponder what he’s getting at – I’d rather not hit you over the head with it like a hammer hitting a cantaloupe. If you do happen to be in Japan (I know we have an international and jet set readership) then go and see.
