Style Council: Ten Meets Chris Horan

Dressing the world’s biggest musicians is no small feat, yet the stylists featured inside 10 Magazine Issue 74 make crafting superstar fashion perfection look like light work.

Chris Horan, fashion stylist

Dressing Charli xcx for her Brat world takeover has put Horan at the heart of the cultural conversation. It’s a place where he feels comfortable, given his ambition to create looks for clients including Christina Aguilera, Barbie Ferreira, Benito Skinner and Hari Nef that live on in the memory.

How would you describe what you do?

I help artists execute or find their personal style.

What place does fashion have in music today?

It’s an important part of communicating an artist’s mission statement. Today, using fashion as a way to generate excitement can help propel the project they’re promoting.

How do you work with an artist to build their image?

Every artist is different. My favourite type of collaboration is starting at the beginning of a project and being able to help pitch ideas based on the music. Creatively speaking, that’s the most fulfilling.

What’s been your proudest image-making moment with an artist?

I really love the David LaChapelle shoot Charli did for New York [last August]. Checking off a teenage dream was pretty incredible. The second one would be the Paper cover with Christina Aguilera [also August 2024]. I love getting to work with artists who are willing to go for it and can recognise good ideas. Both are examples of artists who truly have their own unique visions and points of view – but they welcome collaboration.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

The creative families I’ve been able to become a part of who have helped me grow and become close friends.

Chris wears jumper by ELDER STATESMEN, jeans by ACNE STUDIOS, watch by CARTIER

What’s the toughest thing about your job?

The schedule.

What’s your favourite getting-ready track?

Currently anything by Mk.gee, but my all-time one is probably Focus by Charli.

How do you measure success?

I just don’t want anyone who I’ve worked with and alongside to think I’m a nightmare. And I hope I’ll be a part of some projects that in 30 years’ time people will still think about.

Tour looks or red carpet dressing – which do you prefer?

Tour because it’s more fun when you see it happen live.

How do you deal with superstar demands?

Only say yes to jobs with nice people and you won’t have to deal with superstar demands.

If you were in a band, how would you style yourself?

Probably in full The Row or YSL.
