Solid Homme shone a light onto the ordinary and the mundane for its AW24 collection. Exploring the repetitive melancholy of commuting to work, the looks drew inspiration from Edward Hopper – the realist painter known for injecting beauty into unremarkable scenery. Reflecting this spirit in its palette, the South Korean brand chose emotive colours like deep green and muted navy, accompanied by the occasional dash of a bright, striking red.
Each look was personality-driven, with motorcycle helmets stationed on skulls or carried under arms to mark the ever-moving energy of the rushed commuter. A collaboration with audiophiles Bang & Olufsen manifested in the form of black and beige headphones slung over origami-style slouchy bags and British brand Pantherella provided skintight socks.
This season’s design language found its form in contrast, pairing chunky puffers and bomber jackets with skintight monochrome leggings. Iridescent materials were integrated throughout, offering a stark dichotomy between more vintage fabrics like homespun tweed, while cycling tops, denim co-ords and track-like jackets brought a contemporary edge.
With the show set around a single bus stop, the presentation concept was developed with the Bauhaus idea of “form follows function” in mind, deploying lone commuters carrying out solitary actions like reading the paper or going on their phone throughout the show. If only waiting for the 258 from Hackney Central looked this chic.
