Shrimps: Ready-To-Wear AW19

The final day of London Fashion Week began with a completely joyous classical-inspired collection by Shrimps. For her catwalk debut designer Hannah Weiland showcased her AW19 offering against a backdrop painted with a mythological Titian-esque, fresco-like frieze. Artist Ryan Driscoll depicted Greek goddesses symbolising femininity, strength and power larger than life, surrounding trompe-l’œil Corinthian columned pediment-topped doorway through which the models appeared on the mauve carpeted catwalk.

First out was Olympia Campbell dresses in a gold Grecian gown, which looked like it was plucked fresh out of a Hellenistic pastural scene, setting the mood of what was to follow. Since launching with a single faux fur coat in 2013, the label has evolved from a fluffy outerwear specialist into a thriving ready-to-wear and accessories brand. And this season Weiland asserted herself as a real contender in the party dress market. The Shrimps party dresses are the kind you’d want to wear the following day too, not because you haven’t been to bed or gone home to change, just because they’re so darn good! Rest assured the outwear wasn’t neglected. This season Weiland’s signature show stopping coats were realised as a fluffy belted baby chick yellow wrap around, a black cuffed and collard, Zebra printed ode to The Simple Life’s style and a huge printed cape all warrant a specific mention.

Looks were finished with crystal cocktail earrings or furry or beaded headbands. And then there were the bags… Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year you’ll more than familiar with Shrimp’s pearl and bead encrusted bags, which have become an absolutely must-have it-girl accessory and inspired countless imitations. AW19s were reimagined in new shapes and colour ways, inspired by cross stitch and blown up into oversized shoppers or totes. The inimitable boxy ‘Antonia’ bag that started it all is named after Weiland’s gallerist and curator friend Antonia Marsh, who sat front row alongside the likes of Adwoa Aboah, Lady Amelia Windsor, artist Faye Wei Wei and Helena Bonham Carter. A good turn-out for a first foray into runway we’d say!
